Somehow I try to keep up, but I put my priorities first. I’m a SAHM — one would think my time would be more available to write, but when you’re as busy as I am or simply trying to enjoy life…or be knocked down by it… only to get up again & conquer whatever else is thrown my way – I do what I can (longestrunonsentenceever)
The last three weeks have been interesting to say the very least. A couple of days past my daughter’s last day of school before Winter break began she came down with Influenza A. I was positive I was going to get it, but somehow I didn’t and boy am I grateful. She was given Tamiflu and sent back home. Within a few days she started complaining that it hurt when she used the bathroom. Back to Urgent Care we went to find out that she had a UTI. So she was put on Bactrim (a sulfa based antibiotic).
A couple of days later Christmas Eve was here. We usually spend it with my mom and step-dad. With her still being sick and now having the UTI we decided to stay home. Fortunately my Mom and Step-Dad showed up, surprisingly, and we were able to celebrate and open gifts. The next day we went to her house, where my extended family was present (and also recovering from norovirus — that we didn’t know), and celebrated Christmas with all of them.
The next day my daughter is puking and had diarrhea. Then my husband, who usually has the immune system of titanium, came down with it within an hour and a few hours later…it got me.
Three days in bed, puking 6 times and literally praying for an end…it was over. Soon to be followed up with Alexis having an allergic reaction to Bactrim. She was broken out with hives from head-to-toe. So we rushed her to the ER because one of the major side-effects of Bactrim is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome that starts out as hives. I was scared. No, petrified. SJS can be fatal.
After an hour there, the ER Doc proclaims that she doesn’t have SJS nor did she have a UTI. Wait. What? She said she spoke with the Urgent Care and they told her it was just flora and not a UTI. They never called to tell me this nor to take her off of the Bactrim. I was livid. I still am.
Not only that, our Pharmacist told us that she should have only been given a 3 day dose for that…not 10; she was only on it for 8 when the allergic reaction came to light.
All they gave her at the ER was Benadryl and sent us home. The next morning the hives were even worse. A LOT worse. Back in the Jeep we went to the ER…this time I demanded something more be done. They started her on steroids; a small dose, but enough to get the hives to start going away.
Here we are now and 95% of the hives are gone, the steroids are finished and her new pediatrician says she’s good to go. Well, with the exception that her immune system is shot for a while. Because of all she has been through and the steroid use…he’s advised us to keep a close eye on her. Fine with me… we already were.
Now I’m fighting something that has had me in bed for the last 24 hours. I’m keeping kiddo home from school because schools are nothing, but a huge germ pile and I’m scared she’ll get something else.
All of this and we had 13.5″ of snow…with more to be expected.
When we’re all healthy… we’re doing something. Being shacked up in this house, outside of ER/Doc visits, is about to drive THIS Mommy insane.
You know what I want for 2014? Health. For my daughter, my husband and myself. And stat. We’ve paid our dues.
And I miss blogging.
Just say no to Bactrim. Never again.
